From Highway Bandits to Digital Ghosts: Why Cybersecurity Must Be Democratized

At a recent gathering with CEO India, I asked the room a simple question: “How many of you run your entire lives from your smartphone?”

The answer, unsurprisingly, was 100%.

Your wealth, your gold, your contacts, your private identity, and your business secrets—everything sits in that small rectangular device in your pocket. We have effectively digitized our entire existence. Yet, our approach to protecting that existence is stuck in the past.

The Evolution of the “Bandit” I often think back to the stories of the 1970s—the era of the “highway bandit.” In those days, a threat was physical. A bandit rode a horse, wore a mask, and you could see them coming. Fear was tangible.

Today, the bandit has evolved. They don’t ride horses; they ride fiber-optic cables. They don’t wear masks; they hide behind encrypted servers in anonymous basements, perhaps in Eastern Europe or Southeast Asia. They are “smart hackers,” and they are targeting the average Indian not with guns, but with code.

The government is doing its part with initiatives like Sanchar Saathi, and that is commendable. But as business leaders and innovators, we noticed a gap. The tools to fight these invisible threats were either too complex, too expensive, or restricted to large corporations.

The Philosophy of Democratization This observation drove our latest mission at Enjin Experiences. We realized that if the threat is universal, the protection must be universal too.

We didn’t want to just build another antivirus. We wanted to build a “Super App” for security—CYBX.

The core philosophy behind this wasn’t just technology; it was democratization. Cybersecurity shouldn’t be a luxury item reserved for the C-Suite. It should be as accessible as buying a cup of tea. It should cost as little as ₹1,000 a year. It should be as simple as downloading a game.

Accountability: The New Standard There is one final frontier in this industry that we felt compelled to address: Accountability.

For decades, the tech industry has sold protection with a caveat. If the protection fails, the user pays the price. We wanted to flip that script. We believe that if a security company truly trusts its technology, it should back it up financially.

That is why we integrated Cyber Insurance directly into the platform. If our encryption, fraud detection, and identity protection fail, the user shouldn’t be left stranded. Whether it’s ₹1 Lakh or ₹10 Lakhs, there must be a safety net.

The Future is Insured Twenty-five years ago, people viewed Life Insurance with skepticism. It was seen as an unnecessary expense. Today, it is a fundamental pillar of responsible living.

I believe Personal Cybersecurity is on the same trajectory. In two to three years, having a cyber-defense mechanism with insurance coverage won’t just be a “nice-to-have”—it will be the standard for every Indian citizen.

The bandits have evolved. It is time we did too.
